WHAT IS A LABYRINTH? Labyrinths have been in existence for over 4000 years. Probably the most familiar design is the 11 circuit labyrinth found in Chartres Cathedral, which was built about 1200. Our labyrinth is the much older Classical or Cretan design and has 7 circuits. A labyrinth is different from a maze. Mazes have multiple paths and choices, most of which lead nowhere. Labyrinths are unicursal, having a single path leading to the center. GUIDELINES FOR WALKING Always approach a labyrinth in the spirit of love. You may want to walk simply to experience a time of quiet and stillness — or you may want to do the following: Walk to the center opening your heart to the sacred. As you pause in the center be still and listen, inwardly. As you walk out of the labyrinth be aware of your oneness with all of God’s creation. LABYRINTH ETIQUETTE Wait for the person in front of you to be half way around the first circle before you begin. As you meet people on the path (which is 2-way) simply step aside to pass.
